In the wake of the events on January 6th, I decided to take a look back at my notes during the 2016 election (which I covered on Purple). One of the pieces that I remembered and immediately pulled up was Andrew Sullivan’s op-ed in New York Magazine published on May 1, 2016. This was before Trump was even elected.
It’s entitled America Has Never Been So Ripe for Tyranny, and walks the reader through Plato’s prescient writing about the weakness of democracies, and the potential for that weakness to be exacerbated to the point where a “demagogic, tyrannical character” would…
Andrew McCabe, the Deputy Director of the FBI, resigned his post today (Jan 29, 2018). He was already set to retire this year, but seems like he rushed his goodbye more than planned. The question is, why?
We’re not sure what the answer is yet, but here are some interesting pieces of info to consider as we’re thinking about it.
Let’s take a look at some of these comments that left me reacting like…
I sent this text out to my Purple channel a week or so ago and have been working on this post to answer all of the awesome texts I received back asking questions.
If you have any more questions or thoughts about this post, text Rebecca to 35945 to subscribe to my channel and shoot me a text.
**Note: This doesn’t go through every provision in both House and Senate bills because it would be the length of an e-book. I highlighted some of the main provisions in both.**
The bill is projected to cut Medicaid spending by…
One summer afternoon in the mailroom of a U.S. Senator I started a Tumblr blog called Purple Politics. I was still in college and had achieved full political-nerd status with my friends, who would use me as their news source in lieu of reading the news themselves. I’d get texts all the time, like:
The Supreme Court handed down a big decision today, but to understand it we gotta go back to the 90's.
Back in the day, racial re-districting (redrawing districts based on race) was actually something Democrats/liberals supported. The Voting Rights Act, which was passed in 1965, barred states from diluting minority votes and it required the creation of majority-minority districts in states with a history of racial discrimination. It was a way of ensuring that minority votes had power to elect someone to represent them in Congress.
Let’s take a look at these two districts in North Carolina: Districts 1 and…
Information is the currency of democracy (shoutout to Ralph Nader for that quote). But information does not work without trust.
We choose not to investigate every piece of news ourselves. Realistically, we can’t. Continually fact-checking and vetting the news we receive would be exhausting. Instead, we’ve placed our trust in authoritative sources to do it for us.
Well, good thing as a society we trust news sources! Oh wait… we don’t.
And that reliance on the media to deliver trustworthy information has revealed itself as a newly dangerous vulnerability now that the sheer number of sources is overwhelming.
I’m going to take you on a little journey through the history of health care in the U.S., so we can better understand how the system we have today was created.
So hop in the Delorian and gun it to 88, because we’re going back in time.
Before the 1920’s, medical technology by today’s standards was practically medieval. I’m not exaggerating.
There was this dude, Dr. John Brinkley, who had a health advice radio show. His prescription for basically everything? Transplant a goat gland into your body. This was real life people!
Hospitals weren’t sterile, treatment could get weird (leeches……
Sooo this has been bothering me for the past 2 days. I really want to correct the record on vaccines.
Trump nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head a committee on vaccine safety. RFK Jr. is a noted “anti-vax” person, meaning he believes vaccines cause problems for children.
This is a very serious issue. This goes beyond protecting freedom of speech, or the rights of parents to do what they want with their kids.
This is an issue that can cost people their lives and put the health of the entire country at risk.
Let’s get down to the facts…
